Five Lessons Learnt This Week

Another week, another Five Lessons Learnt. This week we’ve learnt that turtles don’t like cold, how to get a free flight to New York, that you can insure your tastebuds and there’s over 1,500 varieties of tea (who knew?!) and why we need to keep the noise down…

1. It’s getting turtley cold out there…

Screen Shot 2014-11-26 at 12.03.03And almost 200 endangered sea turtles are being treated for shock after becoming trapped in frigid waters just off Cape Cod. The wayward creatures usually spend summers in the Cape Cod waters before venturing south for the winter – but this time, some of them became trapped by the hook shape of Cape Cod.

They’ve got something to shellebrate, though: they were rescued and the U.S. coast guard stepped in to help. Once the 193 lost turtles had been treated for hypothermic shock at the New England Aquarium animal care centre in Quincy, south of Boston, they were flown out to Florida to spend the winter in warmer climes. It’s alright for some!

If you’re not lucky enough to be jetting off to Florida to escape the cold, wrap up warm with our A/W Fashion Guide.

2. How to get a free flight to New York

Screen Shot 2014-11-26 at 12.33.45Fancy a paid-for trip to the Big Apple? Of course you do. And recent research suggests that you can get a free flight to NY – just by doing your Christmas shopping over there.

The catch? You’d have to buy a lot of gifts. The study found that UK shoppers could save enough on sought-after Christmas presents by shopping in New York to make their flight over there effectively free, with clothes, cosmetics, gadgets and toys being around 25% cheaper Stateside.

If you’re flexible on dates, you can fly to New York from several UK cities for less than £400 – so the bad news is you’d need to be planning to spend around £1,300 on your gifts to make it worth your while. Happy shopping…

If that all sounds like a bit too much hassle, choose from our LFX Christmas Gift Guide – you can order everything online, so you don’t have to set foot in a single shop!

3. Monopoly causes trouble

Screen Shot 2014-11-26 at 12.51.02Now, board games are known for causing an argument or two (particularly among competitive types) but let this be a warning to you ahead of any Boxing Day board game tournaments – a woman was arrested this week over a Monopoly row with her boyfriend.

Officers in New Hampshire were called to the home of 21-year-old Alyssa Ferraro after receiving a domestic disturbance call, and she admitted to getting into an argument with her boyfriend over the board game, and responding violently. She was taken direct to jail and did not pass go nor collect £200.

She didn’t have a Get Out of Jail Free card, either – after being charged with domestic violence-related simple assault, she was bailed for $2,000. No more Monopoly for those two.

4. We’re too noisy

Screen Shot 2014-11-26 at 16.01.28…according to plasma physicist Dr John Brandenburg, who reckons humans on Earth face being wiped out by a nuclear explosion – because we’re too loud. Brandenburg believes Martians have already been blasted to smithereens by an intelligent alien force who were hostile to the “young, noisy civilisation”… and that we will face a similar fate.

He claims that Mars once had a climate similar to that of Earth, and was home to plant and animal life about as advanced as the Ancient Egyptians. He’s adamant that concentrations of Xenon-129, uranium and thorium (no, we’re not sure what they are either) on the surface of Mars indicate that a nuclear explosion took place.

He also reckons that the aliens could be similar to those in Terminator or Star Wars. What do you reckon? Cause for concern or a bit too much like a sci-fi film? You decide.

5. You can insure your tastebuds

Screen Shot 2014-11-26 at 16.28.38Tetley’s top professional tea taster Sebastian Michaelis is a “master blender” who can identify over 1,500 different types of tea. And Tetley rely on his powerful sense of taste so much that they’ve just insured his tastebuds against a sudden palate change – for over £1,000,000.

Michaelis says he’s not surprised Tetley want to protect their investment, as they’ve spent a lot of time and money on him – he’s had extensive training, travelled round the world, learnt to speak a special “tea” language and literally learnt everything there is to know about tea.

We bet he makes a good brew…

The Sweet Reason Company are almost on Michaelis’ level when it comes to tea tasting – they’ve matched all of their brownies and sweet treats to the perfect complementary tea. And you can get 15% off their boxes with the code LITTLEFISHFX.
