Alfred

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.20.40The scoop: Alfred is a genius startup designed to take care of all your weekly errands so that you can enjoy your leisure time (you work hard, you deserve it). For $99 a month, an Alfred employee will visit your home twice a week to manage chores and errands from dry cleaning and grocery shopping to delivering parcels and tidying up. And they automatically anticipate what you’ll need doing, so you don’t even have to ask.

Background: Co-founders Marcela Saphone and Jess Beck came up with the idea for Alfred after making a laundry-room pact not to let mundane chores control their lives. High five to that.

Why we think they’re cool: Because we know busy traders have better things to do than haul your clothes to the dry cleaners or take that parcel to the post office.

Sense

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.21.16The scoop: Sense is a life-changing startup for anyone who has trouble sleeping. It tracks your sleep patterns and monitors the conditions in your bedroom to highlight anything that’s disturbing your sleep – from noise, light and temperature to humidity and particles in the air. And it’s smart alarm will wake you up at the best time: if you set your alarm for 7:00am but are waking naturally at 6:50, the smart alarm might decide to go ahead and wake you up then before you fall into a deeper sleep – avoiding the deadly pattern of “I’ll just have five more minutes”.

Background: Hello, the company behind this genius gadget, is entrepreneur James Proud’s second company. He initially considered developing a wearable, but after trying to track his sleep using similar tech spotted a gap in the market for a gadget specifically tailored to tracking sleep without requiring users to charge anything, press any buttons,  wear an uncomfortable wrist strap to bed or sleep with their phone – none of which are conducive to a good night’s sleep.

Why we think they’re cool: Because we like sleep. And this will help us make the most of it.

The Sweet Reason Company

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.22.10The scoop: You might recognise this one – we’ve dedicated a Littlefish Loves post to their little boxes of goodness (which fuelled us through our December team meeting!) The Sweet Reason Company deliver handmade brownies, millionaire’s shortbread and other sweet treats to your door paired with complementary Teapigs teabags and sugar swizzle sticks. The boxes make perfect gifts for anyone who deserves a treat (yep, that includes you).

Background: Suzie Godfrey, founder of The Sweet Reason Company, launched her business last year as a way of sharing her favourite treat (afternoon tea) with the people she cares about – and helping others do the same.

Why we think they’re cool: Because frankly, we can’t think of a better way to take a break from the trading charts that to tuck in to a cup of tea and something sweet.

Enquire

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.23.15The scoop: Enquire is a start-up designed to give you all the information you need about your neighbourhood. Ask the app literally anything about your area, from where you can your bike fixed to where makes the best cup of coffee, and it’ll give you an answer pronto. When you select your neighbourhood, the app shows you a public feed of questions and answers, so you can see what other users are talking about in your area and join in the conversation.

Background: Maxime Leroy, CEO and co-founder of Enquire, came up with the idea for the app while travelling around Europe and the US. He noticed that local communities often lack the tools to interact and get human answers to their questions – and voila! Enquire was born.

Why we think they’re cool: Because it answers the questions Google can’t help you with.

Instacart

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.24.07The scoop: Instacart is a grocery delivery service that delivers in as little as an hour! They’ll connect you with personal shoppers in your area who pick up and deliver your groceries from you favourite local stores.

Background: Founder Apoorva Mehta decided that more than two hours is too long to wait for your groceries… and Instacart is his answer to the problem.

Why we think they’re cool: Because who has time to plan ahead, anyway? When we order something, we want it now – and Instacart goes a long way towards doing that (their fastest delivery to date took just 12 minutes).

Find out more and start ordering your goodies at instacart.com. Plus, use the code ‘Littlefish’ at the checkout and you’ll get $5 off your first order!

Bond

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.25.38The scoop: Bond is a simple app designed to make connecting with the people that matter a little bit easier. From professional contacts and colleagues to friends from way back when, you choose whether you prefer to text, call or Facebook message your contacts and how often, and Bond will send you a reminder when it’s time to get in touch.

Background: Bond was born out of founder Manan Rokani’s need for an app that would help him get better at keeping in touch with people. Realising there was nothing out there, he took matters into his own hands and put a team together to develop the app.

Why we think they’re cool: Because we’re busy, but we don’t want the important people in our lives thinking we’ve forgotten about them.

Find out more about why we love Bond, or visit the website to get the app.

EasilyDo

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.26.39The scoop: EasilyDo is a snazzy new app that’s basically a virtual personal assistant: it’ll remind you about important events, alert you when it’s time to head to that meeting, track your deliveries and packages, give you directions, clean up your emails and lots more. The basic premise of the startup is to save people time by reducing the amount of steps it takes to get things done – and we’re all for that!

Background: Mikael Berner, CEO of EasilyDo, says the app is all about helping people accomplish tasks they would otherwise do using multiple apps, saving them time and money.

Why we think they’re cool: Because it saves us time and does some of the more mundane organisational tasks for us – do we need to say more?!

Find out more about EasilyDo in ‘The Best Tech and Apps for Traders in 2015’, visit their website or download the app for iOS or Android. Plus, we’re going to be collaborating with EasilyDo very soon to bring you the lowdown on exactly how EasilyDo can help with your trading life – so stay tuned for that!

Atlas Wearables

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.27.58The scoop: Wearable tech is “the next big thing” in fitness gadgets – but Atlas Wearables go a step further. This wearable automatically identifies and tracks exercises your standard wearable won’t register, counting reps and weights and producing data to help you track your workouts. It’s ideal for strength training and automatically monitors your heart rate and checks your form to make sure you’re getting the most out of your workout.

Background: Peter Li, CEO and co-founder, wanted to provide a means for users to accomplish goals that no other wearable device is capable of tracking. He put together a team so dedicated that they share a Google calendar which reminds them not to work in the evenings, and the rest is (becoming) history.

Why we think they’re cool: Because the Atlas will notice patterns in your lifestyle and help you improve them – ideal for busy traders who need a way to seamlessly blend more activity into their busy lives. (We’ve got other ideas for fitting exercise into your busy week here.)

Simply Cook

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 15.28.48The scoop: Simply Cook is a British startup with a simple aim – to get the nation cooking! The basic idea behind their service is to make cooking an easy, hassle free process by delivering recipe kits with ingredient blends to help you make restaurant quality meals in less than 20 minutes. All you have to do is add a few items of fresh food, usually basic stuff you’ve probably got in the cupboard or fridge anyway.

Background: Simply Cook came about when founder Oli Ashness realised his busy London life left him little time to create quality meals – and that trying to put good food on the table was both time consuming and expensive.

Why we think they’re cool: Because we can impress our friends with top meals and pretend we made it all from scratch (although it’s such a great idea, you probably won’t be able to resist letting them in on the secret).

Find out more and get started here – and if you use the code ‘TASTY2’, you’ll get your first box for £4 instead of £10, a 60% saving!
