The Fishies 2014: the winners!

The results are in for this year’s Fishies!

It’s almost time to swap your desk for a sofa, conduct a week-long Man Vs. Food challenge, drink yourself into a stupor and pretend you know the words to Auld Lang Syne… but first, it’s time to crown the stars of 2014 by naming the winners of this year’s Littlefish FX Fishies – our annual end-of-year awards.

Inspired by our weekly Five Lessons Learnt This Weekour digest of world news, sport, politics, the best of the web and whatever else we fancy, we picked the people, brands and stories that stood out in 2014.

So after a long (and not particularly scientific) voting process following our nominations, without further ado, here are the winners of The Fishies 2014…

Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 13.39.39Person of the Year

The unsung hero of 2015 is…

Ali Mohammadian
The ultimate answer to school bullies, Mohammadian is an Iranian schoolteacher who noticed one of his students was
having a hard time. Eight-year-old Mahan Rahimi lost his hair Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 13.40.15due to a mysterious illness, and was being bullied by his classmates.

The solution? Rather than punish the bullies, Mohammadian instead decided to shave his own head to show solidarity to his unhappy student. In no time, his entire class had followed suit, and the bullying had stopped.

Mohammadian and his story became an internet sensation, he was praised by the Iranian president, and the government offered to fund Mahan’s medical treatment. If that doesn’t deserve a high five, we don’t know what does. Ali Mohammadian, you are our Person of the Year 2014.

What we said:
“The Iranian teacher who shaved his head in solidarity with a student who was being bullied after going bald due to a mysterious illness. Because we’d have liked a teacher like that…” See Lesson no. 2, January 31st

Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 13.44.37Central Banker of the Year

Sometimes loved, sometimes hated, always discussed. Our Central Banker of the Year 2014 is…

Janet Yellen
This one was unanimous. 2014 was always going to be a big year
for Yellen as she stepped into Bernanke’s shoes as Chair of the Board of Governors of the Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 13.44.54Federal Reserve System. We’ve all had our eyes on her, and she’s done a good job.

The Federal Reserve System has been clearer and more consistent in approach in 2014, and we like this. We’re looking
forward to seeing what next year has in store for Yellen and the Fed…

What we said:
She replaced Bernanke as the Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System at the beginning of the year, and has filled the role well.

Top of our Christmas lists is…

Magic Whiteboard
The ingenious product that lets you create a giant whiteboard anywhere you like in seconds. It’s already a Littlefish FX office staple, and we’ll be continuing to use it for meetings, doodles,
brainstorming and writing wish lists into 2015 and beyond.

Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 13.53.35What we said:
It lets us scribble ideas and trading plans all over the walls without getting into bother. Genius. See Littlefish Loves, September 1st

Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 14.05.34F**k Up of the Year

Because we all love to giggle at other people getting it wrong…

The trains they forgot to measure
Whatever you’ve done in 2014 that you’re not particularly proud of, it could be worse. Just be grateful you didn’t spend $20.5
billion on trains that don’t fit into their platforms (and therefore are essentially useless) Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 14.06.03like French train operator SNCF.

Incompetence of epic proportions…

What we said:
What exactly do you do with 2,000 trains that are too big for their platforms and cost you over $20 billion? See Lesson no. 1, May 23rd

Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 14.09.56Marketing Campaign of the Year

Had to go to…

There was tough competition in this category… from making it
snow to handing out free money, there were a lot of worthy contenders for Marketing Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 14.11.44Campaign of the Year.

But the winner is #BuyMyBarina – the ultra-swish marketing campaign for the beat-up Barina that must have taken a hell of a lot more time and money than the car itself was worth. Top marks for effort…

What we said:
The marketing campaign that cost a hell of a lot more than the product was actually worth. See Lesson no. 5, July 18th

Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 14.15.42Driving Fail of the Year

From badly chosen parking spaces to spectacular crashes, 2014 has not been a year of good driving examples…

Halfords (don’t) fit
Getting stuck under a bridge is bad. Getting stuck under a bridge with a slogan on the back of your van that claims “We Fit” (when Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 14.15.34you quite clearly don’t) is just embarrassing. And in the age of the internet, there’s no hiding – this particular driving fail was all over social media in minutes.

When an innocently chosen slogan and an ironic bridge catastrophe collide, the results are hilarious.
See Lesson no. 1, October 10th

Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 14.18.37Selfie of the Year

A clever monkey pipped Ellen to the post…

The monkey selfie
2014 was undoubtedly the year of the selfie – and this monkey got the animal world in on the action by seizing a passing photographer’s camera to snap the cheeky self-portrait. Little
did he know, he’d cause a copyright row over whether or not animals can own the right to Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 14.19.49their own works. The “monkey selfie” will go down in history.

What we said:
The animal world got in on the selfie action when a cheeky monkey grabbed a passing photographer’s camera to take a snap – and a copyright row ensued… See Lesson no. 5, August 8th
