Spyker Cars had “the blackest day in their 15 year history” on December 18th last year when they were declared bankrupt. But they’ve made something of a miraculous recovery: just over a month later their bankruptcy ruling was overturned, and the Dutch sports car manufacturers are back with a bang.
Spyker Cars date back to 1880, when Dutch brothers Hendrik Jan and Jacobus Spijker made an ambitious jump from carriages to build their first Benz-engined motorcar. They went on to produce some legendary vehicles including the opulent “Golden State Coach”, still used today by the Dutch Royal Family, and the first ever vehicle to feature a six-cylinder engine, permanent four-wheel drive and four-wheel brakes. The original Spyker Cars ceased to exist in 1925, but was resurrected seventy-five years later, when the Spyker C8 Spyder was revealed at the Birmingham Motor Show.
In its new form, Spyker Cars went on to win podium places in track races and the title of “Luxury Sports Car of the Year” before having a few quiet years followed by their well-documented financial troubles. But now they’re back – and here’s what we’re looking forward to…

Fully electric Spyker cars
Alongside the new Venator concept cars, Spyker announced plans to come back from their bankruptcy threat with a merger with a (as yet unnamed) US-based manufacturer of high quality electric aircraft to develop fully electric Spyker cars in the foreseeable future. Watch this space…
