The world has been waiting for a real-life hoverboard to become a reality ever since Back to the Future II
in 1989: and it’s about to happen. California-based firm Hendo have developed the world’s first functional hoverboard, and it’s pretty cool…
The Hendo hoverboard was designed using Arx Pax Magnetic Field Architechture magnetic-levitation technology. In simple terms, that means four disc-shaped “hover engines” induce a magnetic field which allows the board to hover off the ground. A Kickstarter campaign has raised over $510,000 towards developing the technology, part of which came from the 11 backers who pledged $10,000 each to be one of the first people in the world to own their own hoverboard.
Okay, you can’t use it to float over water or zoom around the city just yet – the hoverboards currently only float about 1 inch off the floor, and even then only over a conductive material like copper or aluminium. And battery like is just 15 minutes, so you won’t get too far.
But Hendo have big dreams – apparently, founders Jill and Greg Henderson reckon the tech behind their hoverboards could be used to create magnetic “hovering” tech which would stabilise buildings during earthquakes, protect homes from floods and natural disasters and much more. Watch this space…
